Meet your instructor!

Hi, I’m Allison McBrien, M.S., CCC-SLP. I’m a pediatric speech-language pathologist (SLP) and mom of two. I’ve always loved working with children of all ages, and I currently support preschool and elementary-aged students in a public school in Petaluma. My work as a SLP is grounded in the belief that communication develops best through meaningful relationships, play, and connection.

When I became a parent for the first time, I experienced firsthand just how impactful parent-and-me classes can be. Beyond supporting my child’s development, those shared experiences created a sense of community during a beautiful, but often challenging, season of life. Connecting with other parents going through similar moments was incredibly grounding and affirming, and it left a lasting impression on me. Happy Talk Sonoma is a natural extension of both my professional training and my personal journey into parenthood. I’m excited to bring together my love of music, signing, language enrichment, and play to create joyful, supportive spaces where caregivers and children can connect with each other and with a broader community of families.

I hold a B.A. from UC Berkeley and a Master of Science from CSU East Bay. In addition to my work as an SLP, I’ve completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training as well as additional training in children’s yoga, which informs my calm, movement-based, and child-centered approach.

I’m so glad you’re here, and I can’t wait to sing, sign, play, and build community together.

Have questions?

  • Not at all. Happy Talk Sonoma classes are for all children. They are meant to support early communication development, strengthen caregiver confidence, and build connection—whether your child is just beginning to communicate or already using words.

Please note that early language enrichment classes are educational in nature and are not a substitute for speech-language therapy or clinical evaluation.

  • Caregivers attend and participate alongside their child. These classes are designed to support both children and the adults who love them.

  • All of your baby’s favorite grown-ups are welcome: parents, grandparents, nannies/sitters, etc. If you have more than one adult joining for class, just shoot us an email and let us know to ensure enough space!

  • Age ranges are used as a general guide, but we really look at the child—not just the number. If your child would benefit from a particular class based on their communication style, interests, or developmental stage, they may still be a great fit. If you’re unsure which class is best, feel free to reach out—I’m happy to help you decide.

  • Absolutely. Children are welcome to engage in whatever way feels right for them. There’s no expectation to sit still, participate “perfectly,” or follow along the whole time. All communication styles, personalities, and energy levels are welcome.

  • We use simple signs and gestures to support early communication and connection. Signs can reduce frustration, support language development, and give children another way to express themselves. Signs are taught thoughtfully and with respect for Deaf culture, as a support—not a replacement—for spoken language.
